partnering with the institutional church

So what if being missional begins to work in my community--how do we partner with the institutional churches all around us.  The philosophy of ministry is so different.  It almost feels that they are threatened, even afraid.   Yet how can we represent the Church of Jesus (big C)  if we do not lovingly accept and partner with the institutional churches all around us?

Re: partnering with the institutional church

I think that a big part of the answer to your question is found in our attitude...of which mine is usually a problem. If we are gracious, inclusive and loving of other churches then the issue of whether they accept the partnership is not our problem. My attitude is often, "Oh, they're just dinosaurs," assume that they would not wish to help, and then do an end run around them.

It would probably be better...much better...to say, "Hey, God's called us to do this over hear and I'm wondering if you'd like to be part of the action?" If they feel threatened and refuse the offer, then I thank them for considering it and "shake the dust off my feet" and move on.

That all sounds nice and Christian, but I must confess that deep down my real thoughts are to avoid the institutional church so that its values do not contaminate the missional DNA of what people are doing as part of the Big C. Life is short, ministry opportunity is everywhere, so why go through the aggravation of trying to dialogue and disciple an institution? Seems like Jesus modeled that approach, too.

Re: partnering with the institutional church

I think that Jesus made it clear that new wine cannot be put into old wine skins.  Yet over such issues as proper missions technique we are exhorted by Paul to not let it become a stumbling block to others or ourselves.  "So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.  Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother's way."  Some issues cannot be resolved, but we can still work with the churches around us in missions- I would even say they desire to do so even if afraid.  Many in 'stuck in a rut' churches still are seeing God move in the hearts of people to return to mission fields.

My point is that perhaps we can work with institutionalized churches but should be realistic that we cannot change them.  God still has a purpose for the Church in all of its aspects.  Being missional minded is not an answer to every issue a church faces.  Do the work God has called you to without rejecting how God would use others we think cannot fit into the package.  Many that we believe cannot see, will see; and God will continue to open us into this area by such faith.  With our brothers whom we love I believe miracles will pour out through our unity.

One last thought: remember how Elijah thought Israel was completely lost and God's reply was that many were still His?  Don't get too drained by the frustration of churches that will reject putting themselves out too much.  The harvest is so ripe so keep praying that God will gather the pickers.
